Scripture:
Genesis 13:10–13
"Lot looked out and saw that the entire Jordan Valley as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the Lord’s garden and the land of Egypt... So Lot chose the entire Jordan Valley for himself... and set up his tent near Sodom. Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning greatly against the Lord."
Devotional:
When Lot chose the land near Sodom, he wasn’t just selecting good real estate—he was making a spiritual decision. On the surface, it appeared perfect: lush, prosperous, and reminiscent of Eden itself. Who wouldn't want to settle there?
But beneath the outward beauty and abundance lurked something sinister—a city characterized by great evil. Lot saw the beauty but ignored the danger. He chose immediate comfort over long-term righteousness. The appealing landscape drew him near a place he should have avoided.
How often do we make similar choices?
Yet Scripture warns us clearly: looks can deceive. What appears attractive might hide spiritual dangers. When we settle near sin, we soon become comfortable. Comfort quickly turns to complacency, and complacency leads to conformity.
Lot started by pitching his tent near Sodom but eventually found himself living inside it. His family became shaped and defined by the sinful culture around them.
Choosing righteousness sometimes means sacrificing comfort or immediate appeal. The easy or appealing choice isn’t always the right one. Always look beyond the surface, carefully weighing the spiritual implications of your choices.
