Scripture:

Exodus 16:2–3 – “The entire Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, ‘If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by pots of meat and ate all the bread we wanted. Instead, you brought us into this wilderness to make this whole assembly die of hunger!’”

Devotional Thought:

It only took forty-five days for the Israelites to forget the miracle of their freedom. God had rescued them from generations of slavery, but when life became uncomfortable, they longed for the “comforts” of Egypt—even if those comforts were wrapped in chains.

This same pull exists in our lives today. Through Jesus, we’ve been freed from sin, shame, and spiritual slavery. Yet when we face pressure, exhaustion, or loneliness, our hearts often drift back to what once enslaved us. For some, that might be an unhealthy relationship. For others, it could be addiction, anger, or overconsumption of digital noise.

Like Israel, we risk forgetting the freedom God has given us and yearning for the very things that once bound us. But here’s the good news: God doesn’t just rescue us from something—He rescues us for something. He calls us to new life, new habits, and new hope in Him.

Reflection Questions:

  1. When life gets difficult, what “comforts of Egypt” are you tempted to run back to?
  2. How might God be inviting you to trust Him instead of turning back to what once enslaved you?

Prayer:

Lord, forgive me for the times I long for what You’ve already rescued me from. Help me to see sin for what it is—slavery—and not mistake it for comfort. Remind me daily that true freedom is found in You alone. Give me courage to walk forward, even when it feels easier to turn back. Amen.

Daily Practice:

Make a short list of 2–3 habits, apps, or distractions that easily pull you back into “Egypt.” Pray over that list and ask God to give you the strength to begin letting go of them.
