Scripture:

Ecclesiastes 1:9 – “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”

Colossians 3:2, 5 – “Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth… Therefore, put to death what belongs to your worldly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry.”

Devotional Thought:

Brain rot isn’t just a 2020s problem—it’s humanity’s recurring cycle of distraction.

  • In the 1920s, it was radio mania.
  • In the 50s, comic books.
  • In the 70s, TV and rock culture.
  • In the 90s, the internet.
  • Today, it’s doomscrolling and algorithm-driven feeds.

Different forms, same root: overconsumption of shallow entertainment that numbs the mind and dulls the heart.

Scripture reminds us: there is nothing new under the sun. Culture will always invent new ways to entertain, distract, and capture your attention. But God calls us to set our minds above—to reject the cycle of conformity and instead feed on what builds holiness.

The issue isn’t technology itself. It’s what we allow it to do to our priorities, our families, and our faith.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which generation’s “brain rot” do you most identify with (TV, video games, social media, streaming, etc.)?
  2. Have you allowed a cultural trend to take more time and attention than God?

Prayer:

Father, I confess how easily I’ve been swept up in distractions. Thank You for reminding me that the enemy’s tactics may change form but never change goal: to pull me away from You. Help me set my mind on what is eternal, not temporary. Amen.

Daily Application:

Take your digital consumption record from yesterday. Now compare it with your spiritual consumption:

  • How much time was spent in Scripture, prayer, worship, or biblical community?
  • Which one—digital or spiritual—had more of your attention?

Be honest. Write it down. You can’t change what you won’t first acknowledge.
