Scripture:
Exodus 16:3 – “The Israelites said to them, ‘If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by pots of meat and ate all the bread we wanted. Instead, you brought us into this wilderness to make this whole assembly die of hunger!’”
Devotional Thought:
The Israelites had been miraculously freed from slavery, but only six weeks later, they longed for the “comfort” of Egypt. Isn’t that wild? They wanted freedom, but the pull of old habits and familiar comforts tempted them to
go back.
We do the same thing. God frees us from sin, distraction, or digital dependence, but when life gets hard or uncomfortable, we reach back for what numbed us before—endless scrolling, mindless binge-watching, or other habits that dull our souls.
Here’s the truth: Egypt (sin) always looks easier in hindsight, but it was never freedom—it was slavery. The wilderness may feel hard, but it’s where God provides manna, water, and presence. Old comforts promise ease; God promises renewal.
Reflection Questions:
Prayer:
Lord, help me not to long for the false comforts of my past. When I’m tempted to go back, remind me of the emptiness those things brought. Teach me to trust You for provision, peace, and renewal in the wilderness. Amen.
Daily Practice:
Write down one “Egypt” you are tempted to return to—a habit, distraction, or sin. Then, write a truth from God’s Word next to it. For example: “Egypt: endless scrolling. Truth: ‘Set your mind on things above, not earthly things.’ (Colossians 3:2).”
