Scripture:
Romans 8:5–6 – “For those who live according to the flesh think about the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, about the things of the Spirit. Now the mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace.”
Romans 7:21–23 – “When I want to do what is good, evil is with me. For in my inner self I joyfully agree with God’s law. But I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body.”
Devotional Thought:
Every follower of Jesus lives in tension—the battle between cultural living and spiritual living.
On one side: culture constantly bombards us with invitations to laugh at what’s ungodly, scroll endlessly, and join in the shallow rhythms of distraction.
On the other side: the Spirit calls us to life, peace, and holiness.
Paul describes this as two laws at war in his body. And if you’re honest, you’ve felt this war too. Maybe you’ve even justified your scrolling, shows, or games by saying: “It’s not that bad. Everyone does it. At least I’m not doing worse.”
But every choice either strengthens your spirit or feeds your flesh. There’s no neutral ground.
Reflection Questions:
Prayer:
Lord, I admit there’s a war in me. I feel the pull of culture and the distractions of this world, yet I also long for Your Spirit’s life and peace. Help me not to live in excuses but in Your truth. Strengthen me to choose You over my flesh. Amen.
Daily Application:
Today, track one specific area of tension in your life.
Write down how it felt to resist cultural consumption and instead choose spiritual devotion.
