Add Value — Week 3 Devotional Guide

Core Value: Champion the Church

We will support and defend the vision and mission of our church. We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with those God has chosen to lead it.

This week's devotionals will focus on what it means to be a champion of the local church, recognizing the people God uses to advance the gospel and the responsibility we share to support the mission of His Church.

The five days will follow the progression of the sermon:

  1. Day 1 — More Than a Fan: Our excitement, engagement, and commitment to the local church.
  2. Day 2 — Standing Shoulder-to-Shoulder: Why unity, participation, and shared responsibility matter.
  3. Day 3 — The Champions Behind the Gospel: The ordinary men and women who helped advance the early Church.
  4. Day 4 — Investing in Kingdom Impact: Championing the church through our time, talents, and treasure.
  5. Day 5 — Championing What God Will Do Next: Celebrating God's faithfulness while preparing for the future.

Day 1 — More Than a Fan

Read

Read Acts 2:42–47, and Hebrews 10:24–25

Acts 2:42 (HCSB)

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers.

Hebrews 10:24–25 (HCSB)

24 And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works, 25 not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

Reflect

Nine years ago, we set out to plant Kairos Church with a desire to impact lives, marriages, families, and our community with the life-changing message of Jesus.

Over those nine years, we've watched God create a space of passionate, heartfelt, Spirit-led worship. A place where the Bible is preached boldly and we challenge one another to live it out. A place of community where friendships are formed, couples meet and get married, men begin leading in their homes, and husbands begin loving and pursuing their wives again.

We've watched children become excited to come to church, learn about Jesus, worship God, and make friends. We've seen people come to faith, get baptized, begin serving, and discover what it means to live in a community of discipleship.

Nine years of life change is hard to comprehend and even more difficult to adequately celebrate.

But as we celebrate what God has done, we also have an opportunity to consider how we continue joining together with Him and His Church to impact our community.

One of our core values at Kairos is Champion the Church.

We will support and defend the vision and mission of our church. We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with those God has chosen to lead it.

Over the past couple of weeks, we've talked about getting up and going, engaging those who don't yet know Jesus, allowing Scripture to guide us, and equipping one another. Every Sunday, we also live out the values of prayer and praise.

These values help define and drive our mission of helping people embrace Jesus in every moment through a clear and accessible gospel, in a community of discipleship through worship, serving, and giving.

And those last three words are especially important.

Worship means gathering together as a community of believers to praise God, study His Word, and pray.

Serving means sacrificing our time and using our talents to give others the opportunity to worship and grow in their relationship with Jesus.

Giving means supporting the mission of the church through the financial resources God has entrusted to us.

Church champions can be identified by their participation in these three areas. They demonstrate their passion, excitement, and commitment by getting engaged in the ways God has called, equipped, and gifted them.

Now, think about something you genuinely enjoy. Maybe it's your favorite sports team, Disney World, working out, your children's sports, or another activity that brings you joy.

When we're passionate about something, we naturally become excited and engaged. We make time for it, invest resources into it, talk about it with others, and look forward to participating in it.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying those things. But it's worth comparing that excitement and engagement with how we approach the local church.

If you were to graph out the things you're most passionate about, where would your excitement and engagement with the church rank among them?

Sometimes we approach the church differently because, unlike our favorite hobbies or entertainment, the church is filled with imperfect people. There are hundreds of reasons someone might find an issue with a local church. And many of those reasons are connected to the people sitting around us or standing on the stage before us.

The biggest problem in any church is the people and their sinfulness.

But there's no church without people.

And the truth is, we need one another more than we annoy or disagree with one another.

The local church isn't simply an organization we attend or an activity we participate in when it's convenient. It is a community of people Jesus loved enough to give His life for.

That alone should shape how we value, support, and participate in it.

We stand shoulder-to-shoulder to champion the church because Jesus died for it.

Respond

Consider your excitement and engagement with the local church. How does it compare with the other things you enjoy, prioritize, and invest your time and resources into?

When you think about Kairos Church, do you primarily think about what you receive from attending, or do you also consider how you can contribute to what God is doing through our church?

Are there frustrations, disagreements, past experiences, or relationships that have affected your willingness to participate in church community?

How might remembering that Jesus loved the Church and gave Himself for her change the way you approach your involvement?

Today's challenge: Consider your participation in worship, serving, and giving. Identify one area where you could become more intentionally engaged in championing the mission of your local church.

Pray

Lord, thank You for loving Your Church and giving Yourself for her. Thank You for the people, relationships, and opportunities You've provided through the local church. Help me see the Church as more than a place I attend or something I participate in when it's convenient. Give me a greater passion for what You are doing through Your people. Forgive me for the times I've allowed frustration, selfishness, or competing priorities to keep me from being fully engaged. Help me become someone who faithfully supports, serves, and champions the mission of Your Church, not for recognition or personal benefit, but because I love You and desire to see others come to know Jesus. Amen.
