OUR LIVES REFLECT WHAT WE CONSUME & ARE EXPOSED TO.
WHAT DO OUR LIVES REFLECT MORE: EXPOSURE TO OUR DEVICES OR TO JESUS?
John 3:19–21 - “This, then, is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed. But anyone who lives by the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be shown to be accomplished by God.”
John 8:12 - Then Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’
John 1:5 - The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness will not overcome it.”
THE PURPOSE OF LIGHT IS NOT JUST TO EXPOSE SIN, BUT TO TRANSFORM THE SPACE IT FILLS.
1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another
TWO COMPETING SOURCES OF LIGHT SHAPING OUR REFLECTION:
DIVINE LIGHT – SUPERNATURAL, TRANSFORMATIONAL, AND ETERNAL.
DEVICELIGHT – ARTIFICIAL, SUPERFICIAL, AND TEMPORARY.
DEVICE LIGHT — ARTIFICIAL AND SUPERFICIAL
FOLLOWERS (DIGITAL CONNECTION)
We crave to feel seen and known. Counterfeit relationship. Connection without communion — proximity without presence.
NOTIFICATION (DIGITAL IDENTITY & VALIDATION)
We long for approval and affirmation. Counterfeit identity. Identity based on opinion, not grace — temporary and fragile.
TRENDS & INFLUENCERS (DIGITAL INSPIRATION)
We want to feel inspired and purposeful. Mimics transformation. Changes image, not character — performance over purpose.
A.I. & SEARCH ENGINES (DIGITAL INFORMATION)
We hunger for truth and knowledge. Counterfeit revelation. Provides data without wisdom — facts without faith.
ENTERTAINMENT – (DIGITAL ESCAPE)
We seek rest and relief. Counterfeit peace. Distracts but doesn’t deliver — comfort without restoration.
DIVINE LIGHT - SUPERNATURAL AND TRANSFORMATIVE
GOD – CREATOR OF LIGHT (RELATIONSHIP)
God creates light and life in order that we might be in relationship with him. We know Him personally and radiate His presence. (Gen 1:3; 1 John 1:5).
JESUS – LIGHT OF THE WORLD (IDENTITY)
The true Light who gives life to all mankind (John 1:4–5; 8:12). Our worth and identity are secure in Him, not in likes or followers.
HOLY SPIRIT – INDWELLING LIGHT (CONVICTION)
The Counselor and Teacher who reveals truth and empowers witness (John 14:26; Acts 1:8). We’re guided and convicted by His light, not trending voices.
BIBLE – WORD OF GOD (REVELATION)
God-breathed truth that trains and corrects (2 Tim 3:16–17). Scripture reshapes our worldview; it’s revelation, not just information.
CHURCH- COMMUNITY OF LIGHT (EDIFICATION)
Followers of Jesus shining collectively as a beacon of hope (Eph 5:8–10; Matt 5:16). We reflect the Source together — exposing sin, extending grace, building one another up.
(SUPERFICIAL) DEVICE LIGHT: FLICKERS, FLATTERS, DISTRACTS, DISTORTS TRUTH, AND GLORIFIES SELF.
(SUPERNATURAL) DEVINE LIGHT: EXPOSES, HEALS, TRANSFORMS, SPEAKS TRUTH, AND GLORIFIES GOD.
John 3:20 — “Everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed.”
THE MORE EXPOSED TO THE SOURCES OF LIGHT—JESUS, SPIRIT, BIBLE, CHURCH—THE MORE EXPOSED OUR SIN BECOMES.
Ephesians 5:8-11 - 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light — 9 for the fruit of the light results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. 11 Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them.
WE REFLECT WHAT WE ARE EXPOSED TO.
