      Scripture:
Genesis 3:1–6 – “Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God actually say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden”?’ … So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”
Devotional Thought:
Before there were smartphones, before there were pop-ups or alerts, there was a different kind of “notification.” In the Garden, the serpent slid in with a lie. He planted doubt: “Did God really say…?” It was the original attention-grabber—the first push notification—and it led Eve and Adam to sin.
This is exactly how notifications still work today. They infiltrate our thoughts. They promise something better, faster, easier, more satisfying. Sometimes the temptation is obvious. Other times it looks harmless. But just like Eve at the tree, the bait is always to shift your focus away from God’s word and toward what the world is offering.
Every time your screen lights up, it’s worth asking: Is this pulling me toward holiness or away from it? Because not all notifications are sinful—but many are distractions, and some can plant seeds of compromise.
Reflection Questions:
Prayer:
Father, help me discern between the voice of temptation and Your voice of truth. When I’m tempted by distractions, give me the strength to resist and the clarity to focus on Your Word. Protect my mind from lies, and help me choose obedience over compromise. Amen.
Daily Application:
Every time you reach for your phone today, pause and whisper a quick prayer: “Lord, help me choose You.” This small habit will help retrain your mind to be alert to spiritual “notifications” from the Holy Spirit.
