Scripture:

Genesis 11:4“Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let us make a name for ourselves.”

1 Corinthians 6:19“Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own.”

Devotional:

Throughout this week, we’ve explored the story of the Tower of Babel. At first glance, it’s just a story about a tower, confusion, and scattered people. But as we’ve unpacked it, we’ve seen deeper truths about pride, rebellion, unity, and purpose.

At Babel, humanity aimed to build a towering monument to their own glory. Their ambition wasn’t simply architectural; it was spiritual. They wanted to reach the heavens on their own terms. Pride drove them to replace God’s glory with their own.

But God interrupted. He scattered their efforts, confused their language, and redirected humanity toward His ultimate purpose. God’s purpose was never for His glory to be confined to a single tower built by human hands. Instead, His purpose was for His glory to fill the whole earth through His people—His image-bearers.

Fast forward to the New Testament. Jesus dies, rises again, and ascends. Then, at Pentecost, God sends the Holy Spirit. This moment reverses Babel’s curse, transforming scattered, divided peoples into one unified body—the Church.

Now, rather than building a tower, God calls His followers to be His temple. We don’t build a structure to reach God because God Himself comes down to dwell within us. We become living temples, filled with His Spirit, sent out across the earth to declare His glory.

Here’s the question we must face daily:

Will we build towers to our own glory, or will we choose to be temples that reflect His?

Consider your daily life, your choices, your relationships, your pursuits. Are they towers built for your own achievement and recognition, or do they reflect a heart surrendered to God, filled with His Spirit, and committed to sharing His glory?

Prayer:

Father, forgive me for the times I’ve focused more on my glory than Yours. Thank You for dwelling in me through Your Spirit. Help me today to reject prideful towers and embrace my calling as Your temple, bringing Your presence and glory to those around me. Amen.

Daily Application:

WHAT ARE YOU BUILDING?

Take a personal inventory today. Towers aren’t always ancient ruins—today’s towers often seem innocent, helpful, or culturally acceptable, yet can quietly pull us away from God’s purpose. Consider the following common “towers”:

  • Tower of Security – trusting more in your money, career, or stability rather than in God’s provision.
  • Tower of Achievement – seeking self-worth through recognition, status, or accomplishments rather than God’s acceptance.
  • Tower of Comfort – prioritizing convenience, pleasure, or ease above serving God and others.
  • Tower of Compromise – accepting spiritual half-truths or bending biblical principles to avoid discomfort or offense.
  • Tower of Self-Worship – placing your desires, plans, and dreams above God’s will.

Reflection Prompt:

Not all towers look sinful—some are subtle and socially acceptable.

Ask God to show you where good things might be turning into “towers” that replace Him as your ultimate source of purpose, identity, and fulfillment.

Choose today to build your life not as a tower of personal glory, but as a temple of God’s presence.
