Scripture

Genesis 17:1–2, 6–8

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him, saying, I am God Almighty. Live in My presence and be blameless. I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you greatly.

I will make you extremely fruitful and will make nations and kings come from you. I will keep My covenant between Me and you and your future offspring throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be your God and the God of your offspring after you.

And to you and your future offspring I will give the land where you are residing—all the land of Canaan—as an eternal possession, and I will be their God.”

Take a moment to read the passage slowly. If possible, read it again and ask the Holy Spirit to help you notice what God may want to reveal through His Word today.

Testing — What do you notice in the text?

Many years have passed since God first called Abram to leave his homeland. The journey into the wilderness was not a short season. Decades have gone by, and Abram is now ninety-nine years old.

Yet God appears to him again and reaffirms His promise.

Notice the language God uses. He introduces Himself as “God Almighty,” reminding Abram that the fulfillment of the promise depends on God’s power, not Abram’s circumstances. God then speaks of a covenant—a lasting promise that will extend beyond Abram’s lifetime to generations that will follow.

Abram’s wilderness journey has included long seasons of waiting, but God’s promise has not changed.

Temptation — Where do you see this pattern in life?

One of the greatest temptations during long seasons of waiting is the belief that God has forgotten what He said.

When time stretches on and circumstances remain unchanged, doubt can quietly take root. We may begin to wonder whether God’s promises still apply to us or whether we misunderstood Him in the first place.

Abram’s story reminds us that God’s timing often moves differently than our expectations. What feels delayed from our perspective is still unfolding within God’s plan.

Transformation — What might God be shaping in you?

God calls Abram to “live in My presence and be blameless.” The invitation is not only about receiving a promise but about learning to walk with God while waiting for that promise to unfold.

Wilderness seasons often shape our faith in this way. Waiting becomes an opportunity to deepen our trust and align our lives with God’s character.

Instead of measuring faithfulness by how quickly answers appear, God often forms our hearts through the steady practice of walking with Him day by day.

From Abraham to Jesus

Abraham received a covenant promise that his descendants would become a great nation and that through them God’s plan would unfold.

Generations later, that promise reached its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus. Through Him, the blessing promised to Abraham extended beyond one nation to all people.

Jesus also lived in complete trust in the Father’s covenant promises. His obedience—even to the point of the cross—became the means through which God’s redemption plan was fulfilled.

Because of Jesus, the promises of God are not uncertain hopes but secure realities. When we trust Him, we participate in the same story of faith that began with Abraham.

Reflection

How might God be inviting you to remain faithful in a season where His promises feel distant or slow to unfold?

Prayer

Father, thank You for being a covenant-keeping God. Even when time passes and circumstances remain uncertain, Your promises remain steady. Help me learn to walk faithfully in Your presence while I wait for Your plans to unfold. Strengthen my faith so that my trust rests not in what I see but in who You are. Amen.
