Scripture

Genesis 22:7–14

“Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, ‘My father.’

And he replied, ‘Here I am, my son.’

Isaac said, ‘The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’

Abraham answered, ‘God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’ Then the two of them walked on together.

When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.

But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’

He replied, ‘Here I am.’

Then He said, ‘Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from Me.’

Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide, so today it is said: ‘It will be provided on the Lord’s mountain.’”

Take a moment to read the passage slowly. If possible, read it again and ask the Holy Spirit to help you notice what God may want to reveal through His Word today.

Testing — What do you notice in the text?

As Abraham and Isaac walk toward the mountain, Isaac notices something important. They have the fire and the wood, but there is no animal for the sacrifice.

Isaac asks a simple question: “Where is the lamb?”

Abraham’s response reveals the depth of his trust: “God Himself will provide the lamb.”

Abraham continues up the mountain without knowing exactly how God will act, yet he moves forward believing that God will remain faithful to His promise.

Temptation — Where do you see this pattern in life?

Moments like this reveal a common temptation in our lives—the temptation to rely on what we can see rather than trusting what God has said.

Abraham carried the wood, the fire, and the knife. Everything necessary for the sacrifice was in his hands, yet the provision he truly needed had to come from God.

In wilderness seasons, we often place our confidence in the tools and resources we can control. But those things were never meant to replace trust in the One who provides for us.

Transformation — What might God be shaping in you?

At the moment Abraham raises the knife, God intervenes. A ram appears in the thicket and becomes the substitute for Isaac.

This moment reveals something important about God’s character. God sees the obedience of Abraham, and He provides exactly what is needed at the right moment.

The wilderness can feel uncertain, but it often becomes the place where we learn that God’s provision does not arrive according to our timeline—it arrives according to His faithfulness.

From Abraham to Jesus

On that mountain, God provided a ram as a substitute for Isaac.

Centuries later, God provided something even greater. Jesus became the perfect sacrificial Lamb who would take the place of sinners and restore humanity’s relationship with God.

Where Abraham trusted that God would provide, the cross reveals that God already has.

Following Jesus means learning to trust the character of the God who provides—even when the path ahead feels uncertain.

Reflection

Where in your life do you need to trust God’s provision rather than relying only on what you can control?

Prayer

Father, thank You for being the God who provides. When I face uncertainty or situations I cannot fully understand, help me trust Your character and Your promises. Teach me to follow You with the same faith Abraham showed and to rest in the provision You have already made through Jesus. Shape my heart so that I rely on You above everything else. Amen.
