WEEK 4 – DAVID
INTEGRITY IN THE WILDERNESS
Sometimes the wilderness comes after the calling.
David was chosen by God. Anointed by Samuel. Marked for kingship. And yet instead of stepping straight into the throne,he found himself hiding in caves. David was anointed in his youth, but not appointed until much later. And in between the anointing and the appointing was another wilderness.
A wilderness of pressure. A wilderness of waiting.
A wilderness of temptation. A wilderness of formation.
David’s story reminds us that just because God has called you does not mean the promise will happen immediately. God often reveals something early, but shapes you for it slowly.
That shaping matters. Because the wilderness between the promise and the fulfillment is where integrity is formed. David had to learn how to act like a king before he ever sat on the throne. He had to learn restraint before power. Mercy before authority. Patience before promotion. Honor before elevation.
In the caves, David was hunted, pressured, and tempted. Tempted to force provision. Tempted to protect himself through sin. Tempted to seize power before God’s timing. Tempted to answer disrespect with revenge. And again and again, the wilderness exposed not only what was against him— but what was being formed within him.
This week is about integrity.
Who are you when life feels unfair? Who are you when you are under pressure?
Who are you when the opportunity to take a shortcut appears?
Because the decisions you make in the caves will determine who you become in the castle.

REMINDER #16 – THE CAVE IS NOT A DETOUR FROM THE CALLING
Read Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:12–13; 1 Samuel 19:9–10
(David is anointed as king, but shortly after, Saul’s jealousy turns into violence. Instead of stepping into the throne, David is forced to flee for his life—beginning his wilderness in the caves.)
Reality: The cave is not proof that you missed God—it may be confirmation that you’re right where He’s shaping you. David was chosen, anointed, and filled with the Spirit, yet still found himself running, hiding, and uncertain. The gap between calling and fulfillment is often where frustration sets in—but it’s also where formation happens. God will often show you what’s ahead, then take you somewhere hidden to prepare you for it. The cave is not a detour—it’s development.
Response:
Where in your life do you feel hidden or overlooked right now?
Are you tempted to believe you’ve missed God because of your current situation?
What might God be developing in you during this season?
Reaction:
Stop seeing your current season as a setback. Recognize the cave as a place of preparation, not punishment. Stay faithful where you are, even if it feels unseen.
Trust that God is shaping you for what He has already called you to.
Reinforcement: Psalm 105:19 – “Until the time his prediction came true, the word of the Lord tested him.”
GOD USES THE WAITING SEASONS TO TEST & PREPARE YOU—
DON’T RUSH WHAT HE IS FORMING.
2x2 Check:
Tell your 2x2 where you feel stuck or hidden—and choose to trust that God is working in it.
