OLD TESTAMENT TITHE-- 10%?:
1. COVENANT LAW - A baseline requirement for every Israelite family.
2. MORE THAN 10%
There were three tithes in Israel’s system:
• 10% to the Levites (Numbers 18:21–24)
• 10% festival tithe for worship/celebration (Deut. 14:22–27)
• 10% every 3rd year for the poor (Deut. 14:28–29)
3. PURPOSE
• Fund the ministry (Levites & priests)
• Support Temple worship
• Care for the poor, widows, orphans
• Reinforce dependence on God
• Build community
• Fuel mission (Israel as a light to nations)
NEW TESTAMENT GENEROSITY:
• Fund the ministry (Apostles, Church Leaders)
• Support Places of worship
• Care for the poor, widows, orphans
• Reinforce dependence on God
• Build community
• Fuel Gospel mission
WE TITHE NOT AS AN OBLIGATION TO THE LAW BUT AS A RESPONSE TO GOD'S LOVE.
Mark 12:41-44 - Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. 43 Summoning His disciples, He said to them, “I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. 44 For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed —all she had to live on.”
Matthew 22:15-22 - Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap Him by what He said. 16 They sent their disciples to Him, with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality. 17 Tell us, therefore, what You think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” 18 But perceiving their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing Me, hypocrites? 19 Show Me the coin used for the tax.” So they brought Him a denarius. 20 “Whose image and inscription is this?” He asked them. 21 “Caesar’s,” they said to Him. Then He said to them, “Therefore give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left Him and went away.
GOD LOVED US, SO HE GAVE. WE LOVE GOD, SO WE GIVE.
PRACTICING BIBLICAL GENEROSITY TEACHES US TO HANDLE OUR FINANCES WELL AND STEWARD EVERYTHING GOD HAS GIVEN US.
OPTION #1 – STOP BEING A GENEROUS CHURCH
-
No coffee & donuts — $600/mo
-
No VIP or 2nd Time Guest gifts — $1,200/yr
-
No extra items for Kids (snacks, diapers, wipes, activities) — $600–$800/mo
-
No outreach events — $6,000–$8,000/yr

OPTION #2 – REMOVE PAID STAFF
-
Move all staff to part-time
-
Staff become bi-vocational
-
Possible loss of employees (unable to provide for families)
-
Divided focus between multiple jobs
-
Ministry quality and support would decrease
-
Struggles for the church would increase
OPTION #3 – FUEL THE MISSION: ADD GIVERS TO THE “GAS FUND”
With a $5,000 monthly shortfall:
-
50 people give $100/mo ($25/wk)
-
70 people give $71/mo ($17.75/wk)
-
100 people give $50/mo ($12.50/wk)
2 Corinthians 8:2- During a severe testing by affliction, their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed into the wealth of their generosity.
2 Corinthians 9:6-8,11-12 - Remember this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work. 11 You will be enriched in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God.
THE PORTION YOU GIVE ISN’T AS IMPORTANT AS THE POSTURE OF YOUR HEART.
