WEEK 5 – JESUS
VICTORY IN THE WILDERNESS
We’ve been walking through the wilderness all throughout Scripture.
Adam was driven into the wilderness because of sin.
Abraham was called into the wilderness by faith.
Moses was shaped in the wilderness before being sent.
David was formed in the wilderness while waiting in caves.
And now… we come to Jesus.
And what we’re about to see is this:
Where every other person experienced the wilderness… Jesus conquers it.
Jesus doesn’t just enter a wilderness. He enters our wilderness.
The wilderness of this world.
The wilderness of the flesh.
The wilderness of temptation.
And ultimately… the wilderness of death. And in every single one… He overcomes.
Where Adam failed… Jesus obeyed.
Where Abraham wavered… Jesus trusted.
Where Moses struggled… Jesus stood firm.
Where David was tested… Jesus was perfect.
Jesus doesn’t just show us how to live in the wilderness— He shows us how to overcome it.
This week is about victory.
Because the wilderness is not just a place of testing— it’s a place of decision.
Will you trust God… or yourself?
Will you follow His plan… or force your own?
Will you surrender… or try to stay in control?
These are the same questions Jesus faced.
Tempted to provide for Himself.
Tempted to protect Himself.
Tempted to promote Himself. And yet—He chose obedience every time.
But here’s what makes Jesus different. He didn’t just win the battle for Himself.
He won it for you.
He stepped into your wilderness…
faced your temptations…
carried your sin… and defeated what you could never defeat on your own.
Because the truth is— you were never meant to overcome the wilderness alone.
You don’t have the strength. You don’t have the power. You don’t have the perfection required.
But Jesus does.
And through Him… you are not just surviving the wilderness— you are being led out of it.
WILDERNESS PREPARATION
VICTORY IN THE WILDERNESS
Recognize the areas where you are tempted to rely on yourself instead of God.
Surrender your need for control, trust in Jesus’ victory, and walk in obedience through the power of the Spirit.
REMINDER #21 – TRUST GOD’S PROVISION OVER YOUR OWN
Read Scripture: Matthew 4:1–4
(Jesus is led into the wilderness and, after fasting, is tempted to turn stones into bread. Instead of providing for Himself, He trusts God and responds with Scripture.)
Reality: The wilderness will expose your deepest needs—and tempt you to meet them your own way. Jesus was hungry, physically weak, and fully capable of meeting His own need. But instead of taking control, He chose trust. The temptation wasn’t just about food—it was about self-reliance. “Take care of yourself. Don’t wait on God.” And that same pressure shows up in our lives—when needs feel urgent, when provision feels uncertain, when waiting feels too long. But choosing self-provision over God’s provision slowly pulls you out of dependence and into control. Trusting God means believing He knows what you need—even when you feel the lack.
Response:
Where do you feel a current need—physically, financially, or emotionally?
Are you trusting God in that area—or trying to take control?
What would it look like to depend on God instead of yourself?Reaction: Recognize where you feel pressure to provide for yourself. Refuse to let urgency override obedience. Bring your needs honestly before God. Choose dependence on Him instead of control.
Reinforcement: Deuteronomy 8:3 – “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
YOUR LIFE IS SUSTAINED BY GOD—NOT JUST WHAT YOU CAN PRODUCE.
2x2 Check: Tell your 2x2 where you feel pressure to provide—and commit to trusting God instead of taking control.
