Read
Read 1 Samuel 16:14 and 1 Samuel 17:10–11, 16 slowly.
1 Samuel 16:14
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and an evil spirit sent from the Lord began to torment him.
1 Samuel 17:10–11, 16
10 Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel today. Send me a man so we can fight each other!”
11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words from the Philistine, they lost their courage and were terrified.
16 Every morning and evening for forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand.
As you read, notice what unfolds after Saul’s disobedience. The Spirit of the Lord leaves Saul, and what follows is not strength or clarity, but torment and instability. At the same time, a new problem rises—a giant named Goliath, standing in open defiance of God and His people.
For forty days, every morning and every evening, Goliath comes forward and takes his stand. The defiance is constant, and so is the response.
Fear.
Reflect
What we see during these forty days is not just a battle waiting to happen, but a pattern that has already taken hold. Goliath stands in defiance of God, but Saul and the army of Israel respond in fear. No one steps forward. No one speaks up. No one moves.
This is what defiance can produce if it is left unaddressed.
Saul’s earlier disobedience didn’t just affect a moment—it shaped a season. The same king who once led with confidence is now overwhelmed, unable to act, and paralyzed in the face of opposition. What began as internal defiance has now led to external fear.
And it doesn’t just affect him. It spreads.
“When Saul and all Israel heard these words… they lost their courage and were terrified.”
Fear has a way of doing that. It doesn’t stay contained. It influences how we think, how we respond, and often how others respond around us.
For forty days, the giant speaks, and the people listen. For forty days, defiance is loud, and faith is silent.
Respond
Where do you see this pattern in your own life?
Is there a place where something has been left unaddressed, and over time it has begun to shape your thoughts, your responses, or your level of faith?
What “voices” have you been listening to repeatedly that are producing fear instead of trust in God?
Pray
Lord, You see the places in my life where fear has taken hold. You see what I’ve allowed to go unaddressed and how it has shaped my thoughts and responses. Help me to recognize those patterns clearly. Quiet the voices that are not from You, and teach me to listen to Your truth instead. Restore courage where fear has settled in, and help me trust You again. Amen.
Prepare for Day 3
Tomorrow we will look at the turning point: what shifts when faith steps in, and how one person’s trust in God can change everything.
